Time of year plays a role. Summer weekends are peak season — demand is high, prices are firmest. Book for a Friday or a midweek date, or outside of June–September, and you'll often get better rates.

This gets you simple, well-executed food. Think loaded fries, basic burger menus, crêpes, hot dogs, or toasties. Nothing fancy, but done properly it's exactly what a lot of events need.
This price range works well for casual garden parties, kids' birthday parties, late-night wedding food (when people have already had a main meal earlier), and any event where the food is fuel rather than the main attraction.
Mid-range: £12–18 per head
Where most bookings land. This covers wood-fired pizza, proper BBQ (slow-smoked brisket, pulled pork, ribs), fish and chips, Mexican street food (tacos, burritos, loaded nachos), Thai, Indian street food, and paella.
At this level you're getting freshly cooked, good-quality food with enough variety to keep a mixed crowd happy. Most operators in this bracket include a few options per guest — a choice of pizza toppings, or a meat and veggie taco option, for example.
Premium: £18–30+ per head
This is where you find specialist menus, premium ingredients, and more elaborate setups. Slow-smoked American BBQ with house-made sauces. Seafood platters. Hog roast with all the trimmings. Sushi. Multi-course tasting menus served from a converted vehicle.
People book in this range for weddings, milestone birthdays (30th, 40th, 50th), and corporate events where the food needs to impress. The quality difference is noticeable — better ingredients, more care in the presentation, often more menu options.
What's included in a per-head price
When a food van lists a per-head price, it normally covers: the food itself, all preparation and cooking on-site, serving to guests, and basic disposables — plates, napkins, and cutlery.
Some operators include proper crockery and metal cutlery at no extra charge. Others offer it as an upgrade. Worth asking about if you want something nicer than paper plates — especially for weddings.
What's usually separate: drinks (book a mobile bar if you want cocktails or a proper bar setup), any venue hire costs, and sometimes a travel surcharge if the operator needs to cover a long distance.
Minimum spends and payment
